After all, there could hardly be a more logical choice for a classic Japanese favorite dish than a classic Japanese favorite beverage. However, this is not the answer that most Japanese diners would give.
The Japanese tradition of balance dictates that a rice-based food should not be paired with a rice-based drink, since the two are too similar. In a Japanese restaurant, you can generally expect to have your sake served before the sushi comes out along with a selection of appetizers. Once the sushi comes out, diners will generally switch to either a green tea or a beer. This is why we offer both sake and beer at Wild Wasabi!
